Wednesday 30th July 1997 RESULT Excellent performance by City with Carl Dale scoring in the first minute. Scott Young scored with a powerful header in the 10th minute with Steve White scoring with a header from a pinpoint Craig Middleton cross later in the second half. Over 4200 turned up to watch a thoroughly entertaining friendly game. Cardiff entertain a Spurs XI tonight in the only home pre season friendly before the new season. The five summer signings, Jon Hallworth, David Penney, Anthony Carss, Mark Harris and Kevin Nugent, all make their home debuts. A large crowd is expected with kick off at 7:30pm. Monday 28th July 1997 Kevin Nugents deal is complete. The striker signed officially today for a fee of £65,000. Kevin Nugent will today find out if he is a Cardiff City player. The tribunal sits in London today to decide the fee that Cardiff will have to pay to Bristol City. If all goes well Nugent will be able to make his debut at home to a Spurs XI on Wednesday. Details later. Saturday 26th July 1997 RESULT A hattrick today for Steve White with Carl Dale adding a fourth late on. Thursday 24th July 1997 RESULT Goals from Carl Dale and Jimmy Rollo have give Cardiff a win in their third pre season friendly. Again many players were used during the course of the game. Tuesday 22nd July 1997 RESULT Disappointing freindly result from Twerton Park. Cardiffs goal scored by new signing Anthony Carss.Trowbridge scored twice in the opening 13 mins from Neil Coles with Carss pulling one back just before the break. Beevan scored Trowbridges 3rd goal in the second half. Striker Paul Miller yesterday decided not to join Cardiff City. The Bristol Rovers and former Wimbledon front man has joined Lincoln City after going back on an agreement with Kenny Hibbitt. At close of play last Friday Miller had accepted an offer from Cardiff but over the weekend he changed his mind and went for more money with Lincoln. Hibbitt has said that if its only money that motivates him then we don't want him anyway. Monday 21st July 1997 Cardiff have today signed 21 year old Anthony Carss from Darlington. The player can play anywhere on the left hand side. Carss is a former Blackburn reserve team player and also played for Darlington in the 1996 play off final. Sources from Darlington say he has an ability to score stunning goals. Friday 18th July 1997 Kenny Hibbitt is hoping to announce up to two new signings. Both players have been made offers by the club and City are awaiting their response. Hibbitt hopes they will agree today and join the rest of the team on Monday. More news later. Wednesday 16th July 1997 RESULT Debut goals from Mark Harris and David Penney with Carl Dale scoring in between gave Cardiff their first victory of the new campaign. David Penney is officially a Bluebird. Yesterday in a late move Cardiff and Swansea agreed a one off five figure fee for the midfielder. This means the tribunal will not be needed and Penney is delighted with the outcome. Today sees the start of the action. Cardiff travel the short distance to Cwmbran Town for the first game of the pre season. Kick off is at 7:00pm and entry costs £3.00 for adults and £1.50 for concessions. Kevin Nugent who I reported yesterday as joining the Bluebirds has agreed a two year contract. Cardiff and Bristol City are trying to tie up the fee. It is possible it may go to conditional tribunal with Bristol City wanting £100000 and Cardiff offering £50000. An agreement in the middle may take out the need for the tribunal but for now it is under negotiation. Tuesday 15th July 1997 Cardiff have today completed the signing of Bristol City striker Kevin Nugent. The 28 year old has agreed terms with the Bluebirds and all that is left to be sorted is the fee to be paid to Bristol City. They are looking for £100000 but cardiff are hoping to pay less. The amount may be settled by a tribunal. The David Penney tribunal date is this week. Details when available. This now brings Cardiff's summer signings to four. Monday 14th July 1997 Cardiff's first pre season friendly away at Caldicott (15th July @7:00pm) has been cancelled. It is trying to be rearranged. The first match is now against Cwmbran at the Cwmbran Stadium on Wednesday 16th July @ 7:30pm. Friday 11th July 1997. Cardiff will play Wrexham in their first group match in the FAW Cup. Date to be advised. Cardiff are hoping to complete the signing of Kevin Nugent this weekend. Details will appear asap. Celtic will visit Ninian Park on July 23rd to play Inter Cable Tel in Europe. The secong leg will be in Glasgow the following Tuesday the 29th July. Tuesday 8th July 1997 David Penney has been appointed the new team captain at Ninian Park. The 32 year old is thrilled with the appointment and is hoping to lead the Bluebirds to promotion. Two more pre season friendly dates have been announced, both are away. City travel to Caldicot on July 15th and to Cheltenham on the 2nd of August. Peterborough have joined the chase for Bristol City striker Kevin Nugent. The player, rated at £100000 is thinking over his future at the moment. Monday 7th July 1997 Cardiff have been drawn in the toughest group of the FAW Invitation Cup. City will play Wrexham, Merthyr and Newtown home and away in the group stage, all teams qualify for the 1/4 finals with your position in the table determining who you play. Top of our group play the botom of group 2 and so on. Group 2 consists of Swansea, Barry, Bangor and ????. No dates have been set for the matches. Scott Partridge has resumed training after missing out on the play offs with a hand and a foot injury. Friday 4th July 1997 The FAW Invitation Cup draw is tonight. Details will be posted over the weekend. The tribunal will sit on Wednesday 16th July to decide the value of David Penney. Swansea are looking for £100000. Cardiff are obviously looking to pay a lot less. Thursday 3rd July 1997 Cardiff are making enquiries with 4 players with a view to a transfer to Ninian Park. Former £1m player Gary Penrice tops the list which includes Fulhams Mickey Conroy and Rob Scott as well as £100,000 rated Bristol City striker Kevin Nugent. Penrice, formerly with Bristol Rovers, Watford, Aston Villa and QPR, resumed training with his first club Rovers yesterday but has agreed to keep City informed of his intentions. Kenny Hibbitt will try to speak to Conroy today, the Fulham front man has not yet signed a new contract at Craven Cottage. Kevin Nugent is in negotiations with Bristol City at the moment but with City about to sign Colin Cramb from Doncaster Nugent may be surplus to requirements. Rob Scott along with Conroy was part of Fulhams promotion campaign last season. Wednesday 2nd July 1997 Mark Harris has today joined Cardiff on a one year contract. The 33 year old, 6'3 defender joins us from Gillingham where he was player of the year in their promotion season of 95 / 96. Mark is an ex Swansea player and chose Cardiff in front another club who were looking for his signature. Samesh Kumar has stated that he is talking to a couple of forwards, at least one of whom he is looking to sign shortly. Kumar says he would be disappointed if there was not at least 3 or 4 more signings by the start of the season. Tuesday 1st July 1997 Cardiff look to be on the verge of signing 33 year old defender Mark Harris. The player formally of Swansea has just been released by Gillingham. He could be used as cover for Jeff Eckhardt who misses the first four games of the season due to suspension. |
