Where do you start. Instead of being aggreived that three players were sent off and thinking of the repurcussions for a future date all we can think about is the valliat display by the 8 men left on the pitch. Cardiff were down to 10 men on 44 mins after Perrett picked up his second yellow card. (The Cambridge player did his best to ensure a sending off with a pretty dramatic collapse to the floor). On 63 mins Craig Middleton came through the back of Butler and was rightly yellow carded. Unfortunately it was his second. Time to panic no. Time to dig deep and cover your teammates arse's. All thoughts were on how we would hold out with only 9 men. That soon changed to 8 when Lee Phillips, a substitute for the concussed Jason Fowler, made a brave save on the line to stop a certain goal. As Jon Hallworth was the official keeper Phillips' efforts were rewarded with a red card for deliberate handball. That moment saved City a point. If Phillips had not intervened then the U's would have scored. As it was they blew their best chance when a poor penalty was well saved by Jon Hallworth. For the last 15 minutes it was total Cambridge pressure City only managed to get out of their own half once and Richie Humphreys and Winston faerber managed to frustrate the U's even more. Its not often that a team goes down to only 8 men. Even rarer that they actually manage to hold on. Cardiff have had a lot of media coverage so far tonight over this and I'm sure the papers tomorrow will feature it a lot. The City fans were awesome as they usually are at away games and the scenes at the final whistle could have graced a team winning the cup final. Frank Burrows and Billy Ayre along with all the City staff celebrated on the pitch with the players and Richie Humphreys made a point of shaking hands with as many of the City fans as he could. It was a memorable game to be at today. I'm glad I was there. |
