Andy Legg has been helping out scientists at Cardiff University who are working on perfecting the technique of the long throw in.

Infra red camera's and computers are analysing Legg's legendary throw ins in an attempt to produce a guide to training younger players how to throw the ball so far.

Talking to the BBC Dr Cathy Holt said

"It will take a long time, but once we have found out exactly what Andy is doing to throw the ball that bit further it is likely that other players will want to learn how to do it.

"Eventually Andy's technique will be used in training young players."

Legg held the record long throw at 44.6m (146 ft) but officially the record was broken by Tranmere's Dave Challinor with 46m. Legg though claims he has thrown over 47m in training.

Legg said of the research

"I've always been able to throw the ball a long way.

"It's not something I learned to do - it just seemed to come naturally.

"I'm not sure what I am doing that is different to anyone else but it will be interesting to find out.

"And if that information can be used to help other players then that's great."
