Heyda is back with all the stats you need to know about City and Leeds Uniteds FA Cup
third rounds from previous years. Over to John.
City's
All-time 3rd Round Records
* City's all-time record in 3rd round FA Cup matches stands at 27
wins, 18 draws, and 36 losses.
* At Ninian Park, City's all-time 3rd round record shows 12 wins, 11
draws, and 10 losses. Away from home, City's all-time mark shows 15
wins, 5 draws, and 26 losses. City have played two third-round
replays at neutral sites, losing both.
* Should City get past Leeds, it wouldn't be the first time the
Bluebirds have taken the measure of a top-division opponent in the 3rd
round. City have six 3rd round wins against top-flight opponents
since World War II -- West Brom in the 1949-50 competition, Leeds in
both 1956-57 and 1957-58, Sheffield United in 1971-72, Tottenham in
1976-77, and Middlesborough in 1993-94. In only one of those seasons
were City a top division club as well. City's all-time 3rd round mark
versus top-division clubs checks out at 11 wins, 8 draws, and 17
losses.
City Versus the Great and the Not-so-great
* At first glance, City's all-time 3rd round marks don't look that
hot. They start looking somewhat better, though, when you consider
the very tough opposition City have had to face over the years.
City's played 36 of its 81 3rd round matches against top division
clubs! That's 44.4% of all 3rd round contests. During one
astonishing stretch starting in 1976-77, City drew a top-flight
opponent six out of a possible seven times.
* When City met Yeovil Town three years ago, it marked only the
second time that the club had ever met a non-league opponent in the
3rd round. Peterborough United provided the only other non-league
opposition, back in 1953-54. City won that encounter at Ninian, 3-1.
Biggest Wins, Biggest Losses
* City's biggest 3rd round win came during the 1921-22 competition,
when the Bluebirds blasted Nottingham Forest 4-1 at Ninian Park.
City have two 3-0 wins as well, versus Bristol City at Ninian in
1923-24 and at Plymouth in 1958-59.
* City's most lopsided 3rd round defeats: a 6-1 pasting at the hands
of Aston Villa at Villa in 1928-29 and a 5-0 loss at Charlton in
1937-38.
Leeds United's All-time 3rd Round Records
* Leeds United's all-time record in 3rd round FA Cup matches stands
at 41 wins, 19 draws, and 30 losses.
* At Elland Road, Leeds's all-time 3rd round record shows 29 wins, 8
draws, and 12 losses. Away from home, Leeds's all-time mark shows 11
wins, 11 draws, and 18 losses. Leeds won their one third-round
replay played at a neutral site.
* When competing as a top-division club, Leeds have a far better
record in 3rd round matches than when they've played as a second-tier
side. As a top-division side, Leeds show 33 wins, 14 draws, and 14
losses. As a second-level club, Leeds show but eight wins, five
draws, and 16 losses. Since the mid '60s, Leeds's mark as a
top-division club shows 24 wins, 11 draws, and five losses.
* Should City beat Leeds, they'd be the first lower-division or
non-league club to knock out a top-level Leeds side in the 3rd round.
To date, Leeds have never lost to such a side in the 3rd round when
appearing as a top-division club. Their all-time mark in matches
against lower-division and non-league opponents shows 16 wins, five
draws, and five losses. Leeds show 12 wins, two draws, and no losses
against such opponents, though, when they've entered the 3rd round as
a top-division side.
* Leeds have advanced to the fourth round in each of the last nine
seasons, winning nine and drawing four. They haven't lost a 3rd round
match since falling 1-0 to Manchester United at Elland Road in the 3rd
round of the 1991-92 competition.
