Shrewsbury have issued a statement explaining the decision to postpone last Tuesday game and to aplogise to the fans who were inconvenienced.

Following last night's postponement of the game against Cardiff City, the club have released the following statement.

"In response to the negative reaction, and hostility it is worth pointing that the pitch , which was in good condition, was continuously monitored during the afternoon. Despite persistent rain during the day the pitch was playable at 5:30 pm and was passed playable by the referee."

"The weather forecast for the afternoon and evening was heavy showers followed by a clear evening, there was nothing significant in that forecast to suggest that during the afternoon the match would have to be postponed."

"There was then a very heavy downpour after 5:30 pm and at 5:50 pm it was obvious that the pitch had become waterlogged. At 5:55 pm having consulted both managers the referee postponed the game, with the full support of both clubs managers. The storm could not have come at a worse time, when only half an hour earlier we were confident that the game would go ahead."

"Following the referees decision the weather did improve but by kick-off time there were large puddles of surface water on the pitch, which would have made it impossible for the game to start."

"It was very unfortunate that the match was called off so late but there was nothing the club could have done about the situation."

"The club would like to apologies, especially to the travelling Cardiff City and long distance Town fans, to anyone who made a fruitless journey expecting the match to be played."
