Graham Kavanagh will lead City out for the first time tonight in Longford. The match against Eircom Premier League side Longford Town will be played at Longford Rugby Club (ko 7:00pm) as their usual home, Flancare Park, is being prepared for the Uefa Cup campaign about to be undertaken by Longford Town. Tonights match will be a much stiffer test than Saturday's goalless draw in Athlone. City though will field a different XI. On this tour 22 players have travelled. What could be considered the second XI played on Saturday with the first team playing today. Alan Cork refused to speculate as to his ideas's for his starting line up against Wycombe on Aug 11th but you do feel that the XI players tonight will make up the bulk of it. Andy Legg skippered the second XI on Saturday but will still be a favourite to start against Wycombe. Tonights team will be Alexander, Simpkins, Prior, Weston, Gabbidon, Low, Bonner, Kavanagh, Hamilton, Earnshaw and Gordan. Several subs will be selected from the remaining XI. Speaking on Saturday Kavanagh said "I will play on Monday. I feel fine. I am itching to be involved. I want to pull on a City shirt for real and get involved again. Like most players I hate not being involved. I am a bad spectator and Monday can't come too soon". Alan Cork and the fans will be hoping for a more entertaining display tonight. City were under par against Athlone with only Lee Kendall, Andy Legg and Layton Maxwell getting any real credit. City return to Wales later in the week to face Carmarthen Town on Thursday and Crystal Palace on Saturday. I suspect a similar situation in those matches where a second XI will play on Thursday with a the stronger team facing Palace at Ninian Park. Because the match is at the rugby club tonight we cannot bring live chat room commentary. There is no press box at Longford RFC. I do have a correspondant at the game who will relay updates and reports from Longford on both the messageboard at inthenet.ie and on this website. All being well a match report will be available after the game. |
