Veteran striker Steve Claridge broke City hearts when he fired home a 60th minute penalty to earn Millwall a second round tie.

Millwall were in apparrant control in the first half after a 23rd minute strike from Sadlier. With the first half already two minutes into stoppage time Earnie picked up on a poor backpass and rounded keeper Tony Warner to make it 1 -1 at the break.

City gave away the penalty with a handball and Claridge made no mistake. City went close several times late on with Michael Simpkins and Gavin Gordon going inches wide as City pressed for the equaliser.

Paul Brayson Willie Boland and Leo FW started the game in place of Josh Low, Des Hamilton and Gavin Gordon. Gordan was a late substitue for Leo and Josh Low came on for Brayson. City left Bonner, Maxwell and Giles as non playing subs.

Four City players were booked, Fortue West for unsporting behaviour and Legg, Boland and Low for fouls.

All in all not a good night for the 240 odd City fans who braved the system to get them into and out of the New Den.

Elsewhere in the Worthington Cup tonight defeats at home for Swansea (2 - 0 against Peterborough) and at Wrexham (3 - 2 against Hull) have made it a disastrous night for the Welsh clubs.

A big pat on the back for Rushden and Diamonds, the league new comers have beaten 1st Division Burnley 3 -2 at Turf Moor.

Former City player Simon Haworth scored for Wigan at Blackpool but a Brett Ormerod hat tricker ensured a 3 - 2 win for the Tangerines. City's next opponents, Bournemouth, were beaten at home by lowly Torquay Utd. That was the Cherries third defeat in a row.

With Bristol City and Brentford both winning tonight it appears that w/c Sep 10th will be a blank page for City. That means after the game against Bournemouth this Saturday we have the clash at Reading on Sep 8th as the only other game in the next 24 days.
