Liverpool winger Leyton Maxwell has been confirmed as a target by Cardiff City. Maxwell's name was linked last week but there was no official confirmation. Maxwell has been on trial at St Johnstone and they looked likely to sign the Welsh U21 international but it appears that Cardiff are trying to temp him to Ninian Park. He played last season on loan at Stockport and has made one first team appearance for Liverpool in the Worthington Cup against Hull, a match in which he scored.

A product of the youth academy Maxwell played with and is a close friend of Michael Owen.

Report from the Western Mail
Cardiff City are hoping to beat Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone to the signature of Liverpool reserve midfielder Layton Maxwell.

The Bluebirds last night confirmed they were hoping to land the Wales Under-21 player although they face stiff competition from St Johnstone who have already given Maxwell a trial.

St Asaph-born Maxwell likes to play behind the two front men but can also operate as a winger.

He was on loan at First Division Stockport last season and made 23 appearances for County, scoring three goals.

Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has told him that he can leave Anfield.

Maxwell is a product of the Reds' youth academy and a close friend of Liverpool and England superstar Michael Owen. In their early days at Anfield Maxwell and Owen used to share a lift to Melwood, the club's training ground.

He made one first-team appearance for the Premiership giants, against Hull in the Worthington Cup at Anfield during the 1999-2000 season. Liverpool won 4-2 with Maxwell scoring at the Kop end.

Lee Jones, Stockport's Welsh-born goalkeeper, believes the 20-year-old will be a big hit at Ninian Park if he signs.

"He's a good footballer and a very good finisher. I don't think our manager gave him much of a chance but he came on as a substitute in a few games and scored some very important goals for us," said Jones.
