City
are on the verge of another record. Last season saw the Bluebirds score 95 league goals, a
new club record and because of the current run of undefeated home matches are standing on
the verge of breaking the current record of 27 straight league games without defeat at
Ninian Park. Last nights win equalled the record. City beat Bristol Rovers at the end of the 1999 / 2000 season. The were unbeaten through all 23 league games last season and have won 2 and drawn 1 so far this season. 27 games. An amazing feat in itself but as John Heyda explains something we have done before but in very different circumstances. On Tuesday night Cardiff City extended their home unbeaten run to 27 league games, matching the club's all-time record. Here's some info on the one other time City put together so spectacular a sequence: Back on April 8, 1939, City lost 4-2 to Aldershot Town at home. Little did the Bluebirds know that night that they wouldn't lose another league match at home for nearly 101 months. City's next home league setback wouldn't come until September 6, 1947, when the Bluebirds lost to Tottenham Hotspur. In between the losses to Aldershot and Spurs, Cardiff City ran off 27 straight at home without defeat. The club got the streak under way by finishing up their 1938-39 home card with three wins against Southend, Notts County, and Torquay, and a draw versus Mansfield. City lost their only home game of the abandoned 1939-40 season, but since this result didn't end up counting in the all-time records, the Bluebirds were able to carry their four-game unbeaten run from the end of the 1938-39 campaign through the war years and into the first full postwar season commencing in August, 1946. The 1946-47 Bluebirds turned out to be just about the greatest side, statistically speaking, in City history, completing their home schedule unbeaten with a record of 18 wins and three defeats. The Bluebirds scored 60 at home that year while conceding but 11 enroute to winning the Division 3-S championship. Promoted to Division Two for the 1947-48 season, City drew their home opener 0-0 with Chesterfield on August 23, then won their second home match, topping Doncaster Rovers 3-0 on August 25. The home run of 27 without defeat came to an end on September 6, 1947 when City lost to Spurs 3-0. John Heyda Thanks John. So there we have it. Do not lose on Saturday and we set another impressive record. The second major record in a few months. History is being re-written at Cardiff City. |
