Well what can you say. City carved open a Rushden side who were unbeaten in their last 6 games. Mark Bonner scored from 20 yards with a crisp strike when the ball bounced out to him. Josh Low crossed superbly for Gavin Gordon to get the first of his five goals. The impressive Layton Maxwell played to most perfectly exectuted through ball for Gordon to race onto for his second and it was Maxwell again who placed a sunblime cross onto Gordon's head for him to nod home his third and City's 4th. Half time 4 - 0. Gordon made it 5 - 1 on 70 minutes but Rushden found some space and broke free to score with Hall on 73 mins. City substitute and youngster Martyn Giles scored his first ever senior goal to make it 6 - 1 and a minute later Gavin Gordon got his 5th after a bout of its a knockout in the box saw him prod into an empty net after the Diamonds keeper battled bravely to keep the ball out. This was City's reserve team, they passed the ball well, they found space and they played well as a team. The defence were rarely bothered but David Hughes again stood out as a quality player. Thompson was solid and reliable, always knew which ball to play. Josh Low was halfway towards regaining his performance levels and Maxwell played some superb passes and crosses. Lee Kendall was rarely troubled and was in no way at fault for the goal it was a one on one and he was well beaten. Of course Gavin Gordon was the star. His finishing was superb. He was always there and could have picked up 6 or 7 for himself. Gordon on this level of confidence should play on Sunday. Well done Sir. This is Ian Butterworths team and they did him proud. |
