| Mon 12th Feb 2001 - Corky and the ref | |
| February Headlines |
Alan Cork could find himself in hot water with the FA after having a word or two to
say to and about the referee last Saturday. Paul Armstrong sent off Gavin Gordan after
consulting his linesman. It was a straight red card and could see a 3 match ban for Gordan
if it reported as violent conduct. Its unsure if Gordans offence was a challenge on the keeper which would be very harsh or the alledged headbutt of a Brighton player immediately after. Cork said Ive had words with the referee and what I told him was unprintable, I think this is going to cost me a bit of money, If he doesnt report me to the football authorities Ill be very lucky. There is one word that describes the referee today and thats arrogant. Im fed up with referees and linesmen not doing their job properly. The fourth official told me and my staff that he (Gavin) made a great challenge. The fans start shouting, the referee bottles it and sends the player off, Three people went for the ball and Gavin was one of them, but it was one of Brightons own players who hit the goalkeeper and not Gavin. The fourth official saw everything." The linesman, who couldnt possibly have seen anything because there were so many bodies in the box, then got involved. It was ridiculous to send my player off." It also means, because it was a straight red card, that we could be without a centre-forward for three games. If they want to take me to the Football League thats fine by me. Im quite willing to talk to them about this, As far as Im concerned the referee didnt perform. He got swayed by the crowd and wasnt capable of refereeing this match." There were no bad tackles during the game but he booked Leo for persistent fouling. Leo only made three challenges throughout the game." Brighton were guilty of more fouls than we were, so its hard to work out what the referee was thinking of. I think the reason he booked Leo was because he is a 6ft 4in centre-forward. |
