| Tues 6th Feb 2001 - David Hughes set to sign | |
| February Headlines |
Its been revealed tonight that Shrewsbury Town have accepted a £450,000 bid from
Cardiff City for Dave Hughes. The 23 year old defender will arrive in Cardiff on Wednesday
to discuss personal terms and have a medical. Hughes
factfile. The money will be paid in three yearly installments. Aston Villa will take half of the cash after putting in a sell on clause when the player joined Shrewsbury from the Premiership. Shrewsbury fans are most upset with his imminent departure, they rate him highly and claim he is Premiership material. Hughes is Welsh and a former Wales B and U21 international. Hughes endeared himself to Shrews fans as part of the team that helped the Shropshiremen stay in Div 3 on the last day of last season. As you can see from the statement below the sale of Hughes will go a long way to securing the future of Shrewsbury Town. Good luck to Shrewsbury (except on Mar 13th when City will be hoping to pick up 3 points). Official statement from Shrewsbury Town The football club have received an offer from Cardiff City for central defender and captain, David Hughes. Cardiff have offered to pay a fee of £450,000 for the player and after a series of negotiations over the week we have reluctantly accepted this, subject to the player agreeing personal terms with Cardiff and passing a medical. David will travel to Cardiff tomorrow to discuss terms. Adhering to STFC's policy of informing players of any interest shown by any other clubs. The fee will be phased over 3 years and the club have negotiated a sell on clause in any future transfer of the player. The money will allow the club to stabilize financially and will help us to hold onto players developed through the clubs youth policy, which has to be the foundation for the clubs future. Last years accounts showed a loss of £211,000, but against that we have invested over £80,000 in the team with the purchases of Sam Aiston and Matt Redmile. The funds from the transfer will go towards keeping the club on a stable financial footing. The players former club, Aston Villa, had a 50% sell on clause in any future transfer. The club have received no other interest or offers for the player. Manager Kevin Ratcliffe has a number of replacements in mind and will hopefully be bringing someone in before the weekend. The decision was not forced upon either the manager or the player, but in the long term the priority has to be the financial stability of the club. |
