Stand up and take your hats off to the City players today. A cruel own goal in the first half may have cost City a win but that aside the boys were excellent. Hard working, passionate, and they created a hatfull of chances which would just not go in. The stats tell the tale Cardiff had 24 attemps at goal, 11 on target and three efforts against the woodwork. Crewe managed 7 attempts only 2 of those on target. Earnie and Leo hit the woodwork, several of the goalmouth scrambles were unbelieveable, how the ball never made it into the net was a mystery, add to that a disallowed goal from Earnie as well then as you can imagine it was a cup tie to savour. City's crowd today, 13,402, respect to all, Crewe brought 400 so there was over 13,000 City fans there. Scott Young gave City the lifeline they needed with a goal on the hour which was the end result of much City pressure. The centre half happily fired in his 6th of the season from the 6 yard line. Crewe you could tell were not a bad side, they had a thing about them that told you they were not a lower league club, but they had little to offer, while they always looked dangerous it never transpired in front of goal. Most noticeable were Cramb the attacker who looked the part but hardly saw the goal, second half he was subbed. Their danger man was Rodney Jack. Jack gave Gabbidon a torrid time but at the final whistle you would have to call their duel a draw if not a points win for Gabbidon as Daniel did his job admirably and restricted the service Jack could provide. A quick note here for the national press at the game today, the chant aimed at Rodney Jack was "You Jack Bas***d", a light hearted shout that is usually aimed at Swansea Jacks but in this case aimed at the player called Jack. Please do not miscontrue it as racist chanting as has happened before. The own goal will be featured on A Question of Sport for sure. Bowen was head to head with a Crewe attacker on the left side of City's defence. Bowen won the race to the ball and from the touchlne at least 25 yards out tried to pass back to the advancing Walton. The angle of the pass and the speed of it and the positioning of Walton all contrived to see the ball trickle agonisingly over the line into the far corner of the net with Walton scrambling like a madman to save the goal. The replay is set for Tuesday Jan 16th at Crewe. Ticket details will follow in the next few days. So we are in the draw for round 4. It takes place on Sunday afternoon. Last time we were in the draw for round 4 we had to go to Sheff Utd after beating Yeovil in a round 3 replay. I'm sure that all City fans would agree that if we beat Crewe we'd like to go to a bigger team that Sheff Utd this time (no disrespect intended). |
