Cardiff City have moved into the million pound transfer bracket by offering Brighton
£1.2m for their striker Bobby Zamora. The bid has been rejected by Brighton. Zamora, 19,
is the leading scorer in Division 3 at the moment and has scored 16 goals in 24 games this
season for Brighton. He cost the Seagulls £100,000 from Bristol Rovers before the start
of the season. Zamora also played on loan at Brighton last season scoring 6 goals in 6
games. It is suggested by the last line of the
statement that Gavin Gordon was approached after the rejection from Brighton. There is
still no official confirmation at the moment on whether the Gavin Gordon transfer has been
completed.
Brighton's
official website put out the following statement this morning.
The club have turned down a £1.2 million bid for teenage hotshot Bobby Zamora from
Division Three rivals Cardiff City.
The bid was tabled by Bluebirds chairman Sam Hammam to Dick Knight, but the offer was
immediatly turned down by Micky Adams - with the full backing of the Albion board. Adams
sees Zamora as crucial to his team.
Club Chief Executive Martin Perry, speaking in Knight's absence - he is abroad on holiday
- said: "We have turned down Cardiff's bid. The board considers it is not at all in
the club's interest to sell Bobby Zamora to Cardiff City.
"Why would we want to sell Bobby to a team we consider to be one of our main rivals
in the Third Division? That would just be daft!"
Alan Cork - Adams's assistant when Bobby arrived at the club in the summer - had been
looking to pair 16-goal Zamora with Cardiff's own hotshot Robert Earnshaw. Cork has
instead moved for Lincoln's Gavin Gordon, and a £550,000 deal has now been completed. |
