Winston Faerber has been named in the Carling Opta team of the week after his impressive performance against Preston on the weekend. Winnie was the only City player in the XI. Well done, its great recognition for his excellent performances since returning to the side a few weeks ago.

The full team is:-

Opta Nationwide Football League
Division Two Team of the Week
[matches played 7th/8th April]

Darren Ward (Burnley v NOTTS COUNTY): Worksop-born goalkeeper Darren Ward was put through his paces by Stan Ternant’s rigidly effective Burnley outfit. The Lancashire hotshots fired 13 shots on target during the game at Turf Moor, Ward managing to save 11 of them. Unfortunately for him, two sneaked past, meaning that the travelling Magpies flew south with their beaks between their legs. Opta points score: 1,991

Winston Faerber (Preston North End v CARDIFF CITY): As Easter approaches, the relegation dogfight at the foot of the table gets ever more desperate. Winston Faerber will need no egging-on as he looks to avoid the ignominy of demotion in his first season in Wales. He helped his side to a surprise 0-0 draw at Preston, making 12 clearances and two tackles to keep the Bluebirds in with a chance of flying free. Opta points score: 814

Richard Logan (SCUNTHORPE UNITED v Luton Town): It may shock the English public, but Glanford Park is not a fun place to be at the moment. The Iron are looking certainties to accompany Chesterfield to the dark world of Division Three. But former Plymouth stopper Richard Logan will not give up the cause without a fight. He was immense in central defence versus Luton, making almost half of his team’s clearances. Sadly, Luton won 2-1. Opta points score: 1,173

Ryan Kidd (PRESTON NORTH END v Cardiff City): Although drawing 0-0 at home to Cardiff will have disappointed the fans who trudged home through the streets and parks of Preston, the Lillywhites are still clear of the pack. Long-serving defender Ryan Kidd was the best player on the pitch, getting his furrowed brow to 25 clearances and grinding into five tackles. Opta points score: 1,561

Tommy Jaszczun (Colchester United v BLACKPOOL): Steve McMahon has been busy in the transfer market as he tries to wheedle the Seasiders clear of the relegation zone. Some of his purchases have been short-term, but 22-year-old Tommy Jaszczun looks to have a good future in the game. The former Aston Villa left-back was the creative force behind Blackpool’s 1-1 draw at Layer Road. He whipped in a sublime cross for Thomas’s goal, and was always a willing outfit for the point-hungry beachcombers. Opta points score: 805

Glen Little (BURNLEY v Notts County): Popular winger Glen Little is one of Stan Ternant’s best weapons at Turf Moor. His languid dribbling helps him glide by the most awkward of defenders again and again, their frustrated faces enraged by his taunting skills. He was as effective as usual on Saturday as Burnley squeezed past a stubborn Notts County team. He arched 14 crosses towards the penalty area; football seed for hungry predators like Payton and Wright. Opta points score: 1,096

Darren Caskey (READING v Gillingham): Reading and the surrounding area will be rocked if Darren Caskey does not win Player of the Season at John Madejski’s multi-purpose stadium. The slick-haired former Tottenham midfielder is loved from Theale to Burghfield Hill, and it is easy to see why. His strike in the 2-2 draw with Gillingham was his 15th goal of the season, and it capped a game in which he also forced two saves from Vince Bartram. The result was that the journey back to east Kent was less enjoyable than it might have been for the Gills’ fans. Opta points score: 1,325

Graham Kavanagh (STOKE CITY v Brentford): Graham Kavanagh’s hair may be greying and flecked, but his footballing brain is as sharp as ever. He has been in superb form recently as the Icelandic-influenced Potters make a concerted assault on the play-off places. The Irishman touched the ball 70 times during the game, as Brentford were defeated in the springtime Staffordshire breeze. With a Wembley clash against Bristol City on the horizon, Kavanagh could be drenched in glory very soon. Opta points score: 1,160

Trevor Benjamin (CAMBRIDGE UNITED v Bristol Rovers): Trevor Benjamin looks to have heartily rewarded the Cambridge fans by scoring the goals that will keep Roy McFarland’s team in Division Two. The big forward struck terror into the hearts of Bristol Rovers with a goal and three other efforts on goal. His bustling strength and pace is very hard to deal with, and it is no surprise that a number of clubs are slapping their chequebooks on the doors of the Abbey Stadium. Opta points score: 1,180

Andy Payton (BURNLEY v Notts County): Andy Payton has been a consistent goalscorer since arriving at Turf Moor and this season is no different. 25 league goals have flown from his boots and the latest was extremely important. It gave the Clarets an early lead in their game with County, but what followed from Payton was an impressive display of his striking abilities. He proceeded to fire 12 further shots, of which four were on target, three were off target and five were blocked. It is no surprise that he is the leading goalscorer in Division Two. Opta points score: 1,966

Neil Harris (MILLWALL v Bury): The Bermondsey Lion roared loud and strong on Saturday as Millwall furthered their promotion challenge. Hapless Crystal Palace aside, it is a good period for the Football League’s south London contingent, and with players such as Neil Harris in their squad, the future of Zampa Road’s premier football team looks bright. He scored one, but was unlucky not to get a hat-trick, only the monolithic figure of Bury goalkeeper Patrick Kenny spoiling his fun. Opta points score: 1,780
