Billy Ayre was due to speak to triallist Andy Thompson today to try and secure his services at Cardiff City. Thompson played 90 minutes against Brentford on Saturday and Ayre is obviously impressed with the player. Thompson is ear marked to play at right back with City having no other player comfortable in that position. Mark Bonner was played there against Swindon last week but was out of place. If Billy is to play 4 - 4 - 2 then Thompson fits the bill.

Report from TotalWales.
MANAGER Billy Ayre will have talks with full-back Andy Thompson today about signing for Cardiff City.

The former West Brom, Wolves and Tranmere Rovers defender has impressed during his trial at Ninian Park, but now a decision has to be made.

Cardiff play their first Nationwide League match of the season against Exeter City away next Saturday and, if he is to play, Thompson must sign a contract.

“I’ll be talking to Andy Thompson this week and I hope he will join us,” said Ayre, “He’s a competent defender who does the job asked of him and doesn’t lose his composure.”

Thompson, at 5ft 5in, doesn’t fit new owner Sam Hammam's liking for players who are six-feet plus, but the experienced full-back has impressed with displays on the left and right-hand side of defence during the pre-season period.
